Finding Design Applications
It is not yet set in stone but if all goes according plan I shall write my MA thesis and get finally my MA degree. Yeah, those of you who know me were very, very , very surprised to hear I had no PhD let alone my MA. Of course I felt flattered but I never cared too much about "getting a paper". Now I do like the idea, older and wiser as I have become.
This post is absolutely a work in progress and I edit and add and remove on a weekly basis content. I have a vague idea about the structure but it will evolve or something gives me a good example that i can follow, time will tell. Of course you curious readers are wondering, what is this MA thesis going to be about?Let me enlighten you and quell your curiosity. My MA thesis has the working title:
It comes from brutally ripping apart the concept of extrasensory perception and then forcefully adding design onto it. I want to better understand the theory and practice of extrasensory perception and then find out of there are opportunities for designers to create tools. Tools that either or both enhance the inbound and outbound signals.My motivation for choosing this topics stems from the observation that even though there is tons of good scientific research done on this topic with very supportive result of ESP being a reality, the scientific dogmas prevail this research from reaching the wider audience.
I dive into the findings and propose useful, albeit likely fictional, applications for the layperson.The opinions on ESP vary from "nonsense" to "of course" and anything in between. I shall look briefly only at the "nonsense" arguments, hoever there is enough evidence of high quality to support the ESP argument.
There are various view points that I consider, these are still apple and pear comparisons at this stage but I shall refine them:
- ESP is objective and can be registered and measured and enhanced by equipment yes/no
- ESP is objective and can be practiced and improved like learning to play the piano yes/no
- ESP is subjective to the sender and receiver and can be measured and enhanced by equipment yes/no
- ESP is subjective to the sender and receiver and can be practiced like learning to play the piano yes/no
And then I play with these actors and variables. As said before, this is my first setup and it is going to change (a lot).
- sender, the one who intents to get something done. The more active actor.
- receiver, either passive or tuned into possibly receiving something
- equipment, what dos it measure, how accurate and so on
- subjective, is this only my experience?
- objective, is there an actor that shares this experience?
- measurable, can this experience be measured and what does that tell us?
- strengthen, can this experience be enhanced so it becomes easier registered by an actor?
A thought is to take the industrial history of the development of medical devices as a template for my presumption that yes, it is possible to successfully create such tools. A possible start of the historical review is the development of reading glasses and its evolutionary trajectory. Reading glasses started started out as an unique and costly medical enhancement for the sight-sense. There have been many enhancements invented for the 5 commonly accepted senses and I lay them out on a time line.
Now my question is, where do we currently stand on this timeline when I consider enhancements for the other senses? Are we still at that point where we consider it impossible? Have some of us moved along that point already and who are these people? Are such tools already been made and if so how successful have they been? These and many many, many more questions I shall dive into.This thesis is really about discovery, about "what if" and then postulating possible directions for further exploration. As such this is a mix of an analytical study and a creative exploration. I hope this gets accepted. If not, I write a book and continue creating extrasensory design or art myself.
What I really like is to show artists and designers the ESP raw materials for making new products, services, installations or any kind of art work and examples of possible tools. This then can be further explored through experimentation and reasoning.
